IGN Innovates with AI Model to Monitor French Forests in Real Time

A Growing Need for Detailed Monitoring of French Forests

For the past two years, the National Institute of Geographic and Forest Information (IGN) has been working on developing an artificial intelligence model dedicated to observing French forests. In the face of major environmental challenges related to deforestation, climate change, and biodiversity, IGN seeks to exploit geographic and environmental data more precisely and in near real-time.

French forests cover about 31% of the national territory, playing a crucial role in carbon storage, biodiversity preservation, and ecosystem maintenance. However, their monitoring remains complex, notably due to species diversity, seasonal variations, and risks related to fires or diseases.

A Specialized AI for Fine and Continuous Observation

The model developed by IGN relies on advanced machine learning techniques and satellite image analysis. By combining multisource data—satellite images, LiDAR data, field surveys—the AI can detect with great accuracy changes in forest cover, tree health status, and the evolution of natural habitats.

Specifically, this AI can:

  • Identify areas affected by fires, storms, or insect infestations.
  • Track the growth and development of forest stands.
  • Assess the impact of reforestation or sustainable management actions.
  • Provide early warnings to prevent environmental risks.

Multiple Applications for Forest and Environmental Management

This AI model opens many prospects for forest managers, local authorities, and scientists. It facilitates decision-making by providing reliable and updated data, which is essential to adapt practices in response to rapid climate changes and anthropogenic pressures.

Moreover, this technology can also contribute to public policies for biodiversity protection, combating illegal deforestation, and raising public awareness about the state of French forests.

Towards Integration into Monitoring and Mapping Tools

IGN plans to integrate this AI model directly into its mapping and geographic data platforms, such as Géoportail or the national forest observation tool. This will allow users easy access to updated and precise information, thereby enhancing transparency and collaboration between public and private stakeholders.

The project also exemplifies how artificial intelligence can serve sustainable natural resource management, complementing traditional field methods.

Future Perspectives and Challenges

While this promising project is progressing well, several challenges remain. The quality and frequency of available data are crucial for the model's performance. Additionally, the complexity of forest ecosystems requires constant AI adaptation to account for new parameters or phenomena.

Finally, data protection and algorithm transparency will be essential to ensure user and stakeholder trust in this type of tool.

In summary, IGN's initiative illustrates the potential of artificial intelligence to strengthen knowledge and protection of French forests, a major issue for ecological transition and the fight against climate change.
